East River Electric Power Cooperative is a power-supply cooperative that delivers wholesale power through a 2,600-mile transmission system to 21 member electric distribution systems. These distribution systems in turn provide retail electricity to more than 85,000 homes and businesses in a 36,000-square-mile service area, covering 41 counties in eastern South Dakota and nine counties in western Minnesota.
East River Electric Power Cooperative provides wholesale electricity to 22 member systems.
East River Electric Power Cooperative was organized in October, 1949 to secure Missouri River hydroelectric power allotment. A transmission network was established for delivery to 21 rural electric systems. In November of 1950, East River Electric established their headquarters in Madison, South Dakota. From 1950-1953, the original Board of Directors consisted of 9 district representatives. Since 1953, each of East River's member systems has had a representative on the Board of Directors.
