Madison Elementary staff donate $900 to local youth programs
Money will help buy food, shoes and books for area children
MADISON, SD: For Madison Elementary School staff, an annual Christmas Holiday Silent Auction is more than a fun way to celebrate the season.
“The money we raise at the auction is donated to local charities, and we like to pick charities that benefit the children in our community,” said Becky Fjerstad, second grade teacher.
This year, the group raised $900 for three local non-profit programs benefiting area youth. The Lake County Kid’s Pantry, Back to School Kicks, and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library received donations of $300 each.
The Lake County Kid’s Pantry backpack program provides meals to children at risk of hunger in the evenings and on weekends. Administrated by the Salvation Army, Back to School Kicks issues vouchers to Lake County students who are in need of appropriate footwear at the beginning of each school year and throughout, if needed.
The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is a book gifting program sponsored by Interlakes Area United Way (IAUW) that mails free books monthly to children from birth to age five in Lake, Miner and Moody counties.
Program administrators say the money will help purchase necessary amenities for local children.
“Their donation assures eight children in Lake County will receive a pair of shoes as they begin another year of learning,” said Constanze Hagmaier, who accepted donations on behalf of Back to School Kicks and Kid’s Pantry. “It will also help send home healthy meals for 70 youth. Their gifts will bring joy to the students of our Lake County schools and are greatly appreciated.”
IAUW President Lori Gustaf said the donation will help gift 120 books through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.
“It costs United Way $30 per year per child enrolled in the program, so the donation will guarantee free books for ten children in our area,” said Gustaf. “We are grateful for their support in helping foster a love of reading and prepare young children for school.”
Both Hagmaier and Gustaf said more information is available about their respective programs, including how to participate.
